2016 - A Year In Review

Well, I guess you could say that 2016 wasn't so great for the music industry. We lost a lot of musicians, which is very sad. But as far as the music goes, I wasn't so impressed. We had too much hip hop, and an overload of super boring songs. But there were some highlights. We definitely saw lots of great songs. This post, I will be reviewing the year of 2016.

Let's start out with the absolute worst songs. I will give my bottom 5 songs of the year, and then I will review them all.

5. Selena Gomez - Hands To Myself
This should be no surprise to many of you. I cannot stand the choppy whispering in the versus. It bores me to death. Her wailing in the pre-chorus is just obnoxious, and the chorus has more whispering. STOP WHISPERING AND START SINGING!

4. Selena Gomez - Same Old Love
I basically see this song as a pathetic scream-fest from an artist that I highly despise.

3. Jacob Sartorius - Sweatshirt
This kid sounds like a dead pig. His slurry, auto-tuned voice is extremely
ear-bleeding. The lyrics to this song are stupid and childish, and the instrumentals are so amateur. NEXT!

2. Jacob Sartorius - Hit Or Miss
More of this guy kid. The vocals are atrocious, but the beat sounds like it's from 3rd Grade music class. He tries to rap, which is the prehaps the most pathetic thing I've ever heard. HE'S 14 GOSH DARNIT!!! The lyrics are dumb, and so is the song. This kid needs to stop. NOW!

1. Lukas Graham - Mama Said
Lukas Graham cannot sing. His voice is way to scratchy, and he cannot hit those high notes. But I would take that any day over a pack of wailing children! The versus are overproduced. The vocals remain awful. So it can't get any worse, right? WRONG! At the end, Lukas Graham sings with the children! Um....no. Just no. It's currently winter break, but I think that a math equation is necessary. Lukas Graham + A Pack Of Screaming Children = The Worst Song Of 2016. Enough said.

Now for all of this year's hitbound dropouts.

  • Adam Lambert – Another Lonely Night
  • Alesso/Nico & Vinz – I Wanna Know
  • Bebe Rexha/Nicki Minaj – No Broken Hearts
  • Ben Rector – Brand New
  • Bo Napoleon – If That's Ok
  • BØRNS – Electric Love
  • David Guetta/Sia/Fetty Wap – Bang My Head
  • Demi Lovato – Stone Cold
  • Disturbed – The Sound of Silence
  • Ellie Goulding – Still Falling For You
  • Flo Rida/Jason Derulo – Hello Friday
  • Hailee Steinfeld/DNCE – Rock Bottom
  • Jacob Whitesides – Secrets
  • Jason Derulo – Kiss The Sky
  • Kelly Clarkson/Janelle Monáe/Kelly Rowland/Lea Michele/Zendaya/Missy Elliott – This Is For My Girls
  • Kungs & Cookin' On 3 Burners – This Girl
  • Magic! – Red Dress
  • Magic!/Sean Paul – Lay You Down Easy
  • MAX – Basement Party
  • Mike Posner – Be As You Are
  • MKTO – Superstitious
  • Nathan Sykes/Ariana Grande – Over and Over Again
  • One Direction – Infinity
  • Snakehips/Zayn – Cruel
  • Steve Aoki & Boehm/Walk The Moon – Back 2 U
  • The Summer Set – The Night Is Young
  • Troye Sivan/Alessia Cara – Wild

Everybody in the blogging community lists there favorite hitbound dropout of the year as the "Lights Over Paris" award. I guess I'll go with that. There weren't any hitbound dropouts this year that were EXTREMELY disappointing, but there were lots of good songs that got stranded. This was a very difficult choice, but I have to choose a song that was undeniably catchy and came from a band that fails to disappoint.

Lights Over Paris Award Winner: MKTO - Superstitious

Now, I will give out some awards.

Best #1 Song On Hits 1: DNCE - Cake By The Ocean
This song is absolutely epic. We have Joe Jonas with his incredible vocals and his ultimate swagger. We also have the killer upbeat chorus that has me turning the radio all the way up (not the song)!

Honorable Mention(s):

Panic! At The Disco - Victorious
It's so funky and crazy in the absolute perfect way.

Demi Lovato - Confident

I love everything about this song. The tempo alteration and the engaging beat are both pretty epic.

Worst #1 Song On Hits 1: NONE!!!

That's right, no bad songs hit #1 on Hits 1. Sure, some got old. But none of them were necessarily bad.

Worst Breakout Song Of The Year: Jacob Sartorius - Sweatshirt

I've already reviewed this song. Just.........no.

Dishonorable Mention(s):

Lukas Graham - 7 Years
Ah! What's up with the vocals?! Snooze fest.

Dawin - Dessert

I have absolutely NO interest in trendy songs that just blow up on freakin' YouTube. But when they make it to Hits 1? Smh. Let's just hope we Jumpshot doesn't get popular. Also, what's with the baby in the chorus?

Best Breakout Song Of The Year: DNCE - Cake By The Ocean

Already reviewed this one. Just awesome.

Honorable Mention(s):

Jon Bellion - All Time Low
From the vocals to the beat, this song hits on all cylinders. I can't wait to here more from this guy.

Jacob Whitesides - Lovesick

Wow, this dude can sing a lot better than the other Jacob (yeah, him).
Best Artist Of The Year: Panic! At The Disco

Talk about consistency. I loved pretty much every song from Death Of A Bachelor. Still my favorite band of all time.

Honorable Mention(s):

DNCE
Our lone honorable mention. Joe Jonas is sick! He's got a killer voice and he can hit those high notes like nobody else. He released two great songs, and one song that was too good to be true. YES!

Worst Artist Of The Year: Jacob Sartorius

I'm sorry, but this kid just sucks. As I've said before, he sounds like a dead pig. Every song he made this year was overproduced with those chippy synths and childish lyrics. Yuck.

Dishonorable Mention(s):

Selena Gomez
I wanted to put her as the worst artist of the year SO DARN BADLY!!! She released two pieces of awful trash this year. Her songs are so bland, uninteresting and obnoxious. Help me.

Lukas Graham

Oh my gosh, I wish this guy never existed. He just cannot sing. I hated his breakout hit, but his follow up is just a big fat no!

Daya

Just another sassy teenager who is too obsessed with her talking voice.

Justin Bieber

I know I might be surprising some of you, but I just didn't dig any of his music this year. He actually has a decent voice, but his songs are all awful. First he gives us What Do You Mean? which basically sounded like a teenager trying to sing over a ticking clock. Then, we had Sorry. Not bad at first, but that repetitive drop and the slurry whisper in the versus got old old real quickly. Worst of all, Love Yourself. That was just trash in every way, shape and form. Give me those three songs in one year, and you end up on this list.

*I've grown into the song since it left the countdown

Now We're Blurbed Out

Shawn Mendes - Stitches somehow made this list for the second year in a row. I'm glad about it, though, because I still absolutely love this song.

The obnoxious Daya - Sit Still, Look Pretty unfortunately made the top 10. Why, I don't know.

It's great to see DNCE - Cake By The Ocean at #2. Words cannot describe my love for this song.

I really do think that Panic! At The Disco - Victorious should've been ranked higher than songs like Sia/Sean Paul - Cheap Thrills and One Direction - Perfect. Just my opinion.

Calvin Harris/Rihanna - This Is What You Came For and Selena Gomez - Hands To Myself should not be in the top 20. Yuck!

5 Seconds Of Summer - Girls Talk Boys only peaked at #10 but it still made the list. Just saying, this wasn't one of the top 45 songs of 2016.

I can't say I'm surprised about our #1 song. I had this song in red, orange, blue, green, pink, yellow, and turquoise this year. Every color except for purple.

Entrants

I really don't care about the new songs from this Moana. To be honest, the movie looks kinda wierd. We Know The Way is really strange and awkward, both versions of How Far I'll Go are very boring, especially the Auli'i Cravalo version. Dwayne Johnson - You're Welcome is just very unappealing.

Noah Cyrus/Labrinth - Make Me (Cry) is a pretty unique song with a catchy beat, but the vocals just don't do it for me. I definitely don't think it will do well here, I don't really care about it.

We got a nice re-entry from Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You. This is definitely a song I jam to around Chirstmas time and I'm glad the it's still recognized as a great song.

I've never heard Kehlani - Distraction.

It's official: Starboy is easily a top album of 2016. It is stacked with amazing songs and I can definitely see some of these tracks getting very popular in 2017 if they are released as singles.

Ordinary Life and Love To Lay are both super catchy. I really think these are standout tracks that showcase The Weeknd's voice. Same thing goes with True Colors. It's a little more stripped, but I just love the vocals. Sidewalks is pretty mediocre, not much to say about it.

I'm not digging into Nothing Without You. It's not bad, but it just doesn't grab my attention. Speaking of attention, Attention really has an intriguing chorus and it's a really good song.

Stargirl Interlude is the best short song that I've ever heard. Lana Del Ray kills it with her vocals and its got such a catchy beat. Secrets and Rockin' are both awesome and have super catchy instrumentals.

All I Know is really catchy and has that dark, interesting beat. Die For You is catchy, but I feel I was waiting for something to happen, but it never happened.

The best entrant and song on the countdown, is False Alarm. From the freakishly catchy beat in the versus to the crazy, upbeat chorus, this song is a freakin' masterpiece. I'm not sure how much success it will have, but I will enjoy every second of it.

Blurbs

We got rid of Childish Gambino - Redbone this week. This is a HUGE guilty pleasure song for me heavily due to the awkward vocals in the chorus. But, I'm actually really disappointed to see it exit.

I guess that's the end of Desiigner - Panda. It's a little old at this point, but I'm kinda glad it got big.

I'm cool with Rae Sremmurd/Gucci Mane - Black Beatles at #1, but I'd rather have The Weeknd/Daft Punk - Starboy.

Gnash/Olivia O'Brien - I Hate U, I Love You has really faded on me. I really don't think this song is top 20 worthy.

I also don't think that Amine - Caroline is top 20 worthy, either. It's kinda catchy, but the constant slurring make the song a lot less interesting.

I honestly have no clue why Drake - Fake Love is at #11.

It's nice to see Adele - Water Under The Bridge jump despite all of the debuts. It definitely isn't as good as Hello, Skyfall or Set Fire To The Rain, but it is still quite catchy.

Ooof. The Fitz & Tantrums - HandClap took a rough and unnecessary drop. Yikes!

The Weeknd - Party Monster and The Weeknd/Daft Punk - I Feel It Coming took some nice jumps this week. I absolutely love both of these songs so I really hope they have some success.

Rihanna - Sex With Me and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - My S**t are two extremely stupid songs that need to leave.

No! Why is Fifth Harmony - That's My Girl dropping?!?!? That song is awesome and needs to have success like the obnoxious Work From Home (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

New Entrant

Train is back! Though I wasn't in love with his biggest song, Hey, Soul Sister, I have loved some of his past work like Drive By and 50 Ways To Say Goodbye. Play That Song definitely feels less unique then some of his past work, but, it is still very catchy. The versus are sort of wierd because he's basically talking to a DJ. The chorus is really catchy though. I definitely enjoy Pat Monahan's vocals. This song definitely isn't as good as some of his past work, but, I like it a lot.

Blurb That Song
YAY! Jon Bellion - All Time Low is in the top 20! Let's keep this one jumping.

The drops from DNCE - Body Moves and Fifth Harmony - That's My Girl are 100% unnecessary.

So...I guess that's the end of 1989 ridiculously long chart run. I have to say, there were a few good tracks, and a few that were mediocre at best. I've never loved Taylor Swift, but I do like her pop more then her country. Hopefully, 1989's success will convince her to stay with pop. Here is how I would rank the

tracks from 1989 that made the countdown:

1. Shake It Off

2. New Romantics
3. Bad Blood
4. Out Of The Woods
5. Blank Space
6. Welcome To New York
7. Wildest Dreams
8. Style

Calvin Harris/Rihanna - This Is What You Came For clearly doesn't feel like leaving. LEAVE!

I'm just completely done with Daya - Sit Still, Look Pretty at this point.

Get ready for the rage...

GET X Ambassadors - Unsteady OUT OF THE TOP 20 RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Major Lazer/Justin Bieber/MØ - Cold Water took a completely random drop. I'm fine with that at this point.

I am completely on board with Martin Garrix/Bebe Rexha - In The Name Of Love jumping.

Yes...Bastile - Good Grief is in red. I can't stand this song anymore and really hope it doesn't get big.
